every 20 minutes there is a headline that makes me turn to my wife and say "all of these people deserve death and hell," while the average american just sorta stumbles their way through the day thinking "i wonder if president business is gonna solve the egg prices"

I am struggling so much with this reality. I feel so alienated and distant from this large group of people who just... don't care about or even pay any attention to anything that isn't directly related to themselves (& *maybe* the people they know)

I don't get it, and sometimes it makes me feel like a different species....I can't relate. I can't understand it, no matter how hard I try. And I try. Every day I try to understand.

we live in such an amazingly *saturated* information environment and people just… imagine stupid shit instead

so they can go back to scrolling bad tiktoks faster

(i'm not even advocating they have to spend all their time staring at the horrible news. but like *any* amount of effort is sufficient to learn "conservatives are evil, and you should reflexively oppose them, and that will never change")

@saddestrobots @artemis the thing that gets me is that even people who only think about themselves won't put in the time to understand how policy affects them.

I get being self centered and looking out for number one. But when you won't even admit that maybe life is getting worse *for you* because of your government... that's difficult to deal with. I'm not sure how we find common ground or move forward when they don't seem to care, or understand, that they're hurting themselves.

incredibly dire that 50% of what we're up against is "i think the wallet inspector would really like me if he got to know me"
