@Sandra this seems extremely cool to me. I've always loved the gameplay of Puerto Rico, but yeah, the little brown "colonist" tokens that you draft from a ship and send to your plantations have always been conceptually horrifying. I love that this rework was started by actual Puerto Rican people and featured them heavily in the redesign and art process

Yeah, I've been complaining about this for a decade it feels like, often getting booed and losing friendships.
The era the original game was explicitly set in was the era of slavery and genocide, so twisted 💔
A lot of the weirdest interactions in the boardgame community and sickest things that have come out of guys' mouths have been because of this game.

@Sandra I feel like it's by no means alone in getting this response. There's a whole lot of extremely good board games set in this period because exploration, conquest, and construction of an economy/society are all really fun to play. The problem is people who want to play these games without ever being reminded that the historical antecedent was really fucked up. It's "politics" to talk about historical reality instead of living in comfortable stories

@Sandra and it's exactly the same thing as gamergate, and it got heated right around the same time. The only reason it never reached the same heights is that board gamers are on average a little older and more relaxed, and they get together in person, where people are more easily moderated by one another and don't whip up into a mob as easily as online

I feel like it definitively reached pretty bad heights in boardgaming too 💔
And those "politics" and "historicity" and "accuracy" is something they're super into sometimes, while at other times "it's just a game", and when is when? Whenever they can "fight against wokeness" of course.
