@chromaton I'm new and wildly posting to anything that tickles my fancy in the federated timeline. I'm hoping my charming missives and sparkling personality are enough to keep me from getting blocked and or banned. Either way, I'mma carry on wayward son style and I hope you have fun doing the same!

All of the people going after Biden, calling him "Genocide Joe" and threatening to not vote for him because of his handling of the Israel/Palestine conflict...
Please look up project 2025 and listen to all the stuff Trump has been openly saying he will do if re-elected because that's what you're signing up for.
I'm not saying you should or shouldn't do anything, you're going to vote however you want and you absolutely should because that's how democracy works...
just realize that a democracy only works when you actually have one.

Hey, if you're the type of person that can start typing a reply to an argument, then decide that actually it's not worth bothering with and delete the reply, I want you to know:

You're doing fantastic, and you should be proud of yourself. I wish more people had that kind of restraint.

Google announced that starting in June 2024, ad blockers such as #uBlock Origin will be disabled in Chrome 127 and later with the rollout of Manifest V3 (#Mv3).

The new #Chrome manifest will prevent using custom filters and stops on demand updates of blocklist. Only #Google authorized updates to browser extension will be allowed in the future, which mean an automatic win for Google in their battle to stop YouTube #AdBlockers .

#ManifestV3 is deceitful and threatening to your privacy, and now is a good time to switch to #Firefox (@mozilla) and/or #TorBrowser (@torproject) if you haven't done so already!

Google's latest privacy-washing trick is called "IP Protection" for Google Chrome.

If you turn it on, Google routes all of your traffic through their servers where they can do whatever they want, not to mention the millions of other ways they already have to track you. (1/2)

A thread (I hope)... 🧵 1/n

This is an open invitation to anyone at all to reply here and drop a link to your shop: merch, music, tshirts, pottery, wall art, prints, crafts, games, digital assets, jewelry, etc.

The annual gift buying frenzy starts approx now and this year I'd like to support real working artists as directly as possible.

Please post a link with a few interesting images.

Maybe others will drop into the thread and find things to buy as well.

Boost please. ♻️

I received a package today with the correct address but some other name. I've lived at this house for over five years and never seen mail or anything for this particular name.

It's a pair of bluetooth headphones. What's the word for receiving random packages from amazon sellers? Now I'm stuck trying to remember this term.

I'm a totally blind software tester with previous testing experience. I know there are many of you in the #Fedivers working on many cool projects, I'd love to test them for accessibility if you're looking for an accessibility tester or any accessibility consultancy please get in touch :-) if everyone could repost this, that would be great thanks very much :-) #a11y

So it seems there are still, despite increasing numbers of “leaders” involved in “crypto” ending up in prison for being con artists, true believers in NFTs (if you’ve forgotten about those, they were briefly bigger than COVID 19 and about as beneficial to humanity) held a party in Hong Kong last night.

The organisers thought they were lighting the stage with black lights (like they have at LaserQuest to make your clothes glow).

They were not.

They were lighting the stage with UV-C sterilisation lights.

Apparently everyone involved is now in accident and emergency with extensive sunburn and BURNS TO THEIR RETINAS!!

In 18 months there are going to be a bunch of people wearing dark sunglasses and refusing to meet outdoors trying to sell you something expensive to do with “AI”. You probably shouldn’t buy it.

A reminder to people still using the deadbird site: Twitter is every bit as sleazy and harmful as the Daily Stormer or Breitbart. When you tweet, you bring legitimacy to a platform that rightly deserves to be ostracized. And sorry, but this applies to everyone, no matter your income level, race, gender identity, etc.

the funniest thing in the Apple is the last version of MacOS features "video reactions" where if your camera sees you do a thumbs up or heart symbol with your hands, stuff happens behind you like fireworks in ANY video app you are using BY DEFAULT.

A friend was in an online therapy session, describing his trauma so the therapist asked if he was alright and he did a thumbs up and then HUGE FIREWORKS BEHIND HIS HEAD.

It's so bad that online therapy sessions now start with a warning dialog!

The Activision thing finally landed. Which means MS owns Infocom, via an impressive 40-year chain of buyouts, takeovers, and shakeups.

Now I formally put forth the plea:

Microsoft should put all of Infocom’s IP under a Creative Commons license. Or donate the rights to a nonprofit which can do the same. Let’s bring all these legally-shaky fan sites and collections into the light.

(Yes, I’m part of a nonprofit that could do that.)

Pass it along.

My wife's company had a mandatory conference for all of their over 2,000 employees last week. She did not attend, thankfully. Even though it was mandatory she rolled the dice on a Telehealth appointment and the doctor she got thought it was wonderful that she hasn't gotten COVID yet, and wrote her a note suggesting that she be exempt from all in-person meetings for the next 365 days. Surprisingly, to us, HR at her company accepted it. We went camping while everyone else went to a packed, zero COVID precautions considered, conference.

No surprise at all, she's covering for many people out sick today, including the person she works most closely with who texted her to say she's "down with the worst bout of COVID yet."

She just got off of a zoom meeting with her boss, who also has COVID today, and is suddenly COVID cautious curious, let's say. She said it's her 7th(yes, seventh) known COVID infection, she has a "bizarre autoimmune disorder" that her doctors have spent a year trying to help her figure out, and she's come to believe that it *might* just be COVID related.

She asked how my wife has managed to stay COVID free, and my wife went ahead and listed out all of our precautions, and here's where watching this secretly from across the room blew my mind....The hangup was restaurants. She kept coming back to "You haven't been inside of a restaurant in 4 years?" Over and over. At least 4 times in the next 20 minutes she repeated that. Like it was some Herculean feat that couldn't be accomplished by the average human being.

I just don't get it...

Anyway, it was a bridge too far, and so she will continue getting COVID.

We're all just a bunch of frogs sitting in a pot as it gently warms on the stove, too stupid or lazy or comfortable to jump out just yet. But soon to be part of the stew.

In this "enshittified" world, we don't actually own any of the things we buy. The vendor either sells all customer data up front, or what's sold is offered mainly on a subscription basis, even as they're reselling that data. Any terms, prices or promises can be changed on a dime, and your only "choice" is "okay" or not to use the thing.

This fairly describes your privacy expectations for commercial services in the USA. We are long overdue for a Privacy Bill of Rights that says quite simply, if you sell it and it actively collects and transmits data, you have to up front offer consumers the option to turn all it off. Full stop. And then respect that decision in perpetuity.
